Company Overview

Enbridge Inc. is a Canadian multinational energy company based in Calgary, Alberta. Enbridge owns and operates pipelines throughout Canada and the United States, transporting crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids, and generates renewable energy.

Opportunities

Enbridge’s main challenge was the limited effectiveness of their previous internal learning program. It was a self-directed, one-week format that proved too generic, failing to meet the specific developmental needs of their leaders. Recognizing this, the Enbridge team identified two key requirements: a tailored program for high-potential managers poised for directorial positions and a creative solution to teach baseline managerial skills to 5,000 emerging leaders, utilizing their existing Learning Management System (LMS) and eLearning resources.

ViRTUSfied Initiatives & Solutions

Time was dedicated to understanding the challenges faced by Enbridge through interviews with directors to uncover the main developmental issues. This led to the creation of a nine-month LEAD2 program targeting six key competencies with individual coaching sessions in between. Research shows that spacing out learning over time enhances effectiveness compared to intense, concentrated sessions -allowing individuals to absorb information and build upon what they’ve previously learned.

A second tailored Aspire program was developed for Enbridge aimed at their emerging leaders. The program applies frameworks and concepts to real-life work scenarios; the result being true behavioural and mindset change that is relevant and applicable to the day-to-day. The program comprises eight core leadership themes. Each topic includes a 30-minute self-paced learning module, followed by a 2-hour live session and concludes with accountability partner meetings.

Outcome

These solutions have yielded significant positive outcomes for Enbridge. Firstly, the LEAD2 program continues to operate successfully, supported by a notable improvement in Enbridge’s capacity for succession planning. This improvement stems from the enhanced capabilities instilled in managers through LEAD2, enabling Enbridge to confidently identify and promote individuals based on their developed skills and competencies.

Additionally, Aspire has seen substantial benefits, with a significantly increased cohort size resulting in a considerable reduction in cost per participant. This cost efficiency has enabled Enbridge to enroll a larger number of individuals into the program, thereby expanding access to valuable developmental opportunities across the organization.
